| FIFA Interactive World Cup
Saturday 21.11.2009 2009 19:13 by Pudzian
Right then. FIFA Interactive World Cup. Yep, you guessed it, this blog (and subsequent ones) is going to act as the information point for the FIWC activities in the UK. As a quick recap for those that have been living under a rock, FIWC10 is the world’s largest FIFA gaming tournament and is operated by FIFA in partnership with us here at EA SPORTS and the nice guys over at PlayStation. This does means that it is exclusive to the PS3 so I know some readers may well stop here (if you only own an Xbox 360 for example).
To give you a quick rundown before wading headlong into the details of activities in UK, here are the major points for the tournament as a whole:
- First prize of $20,000
- Grand Final in Barcelona, Spain, May 2010
- 32 Players for the Grand Final
- 10 players found via global live qualifying events in the following countries: UK, Russia, France, Italy, Denmark, Poland, Japan, Australia, South Africa and Brazil.
- 21 players found via the online mode and leaderboard inside FIFA 10 on the PS3 more info can be found here.
So moving swiftly on to the UK activities that will lead to the UK live event in March 2010 and all the information you need. An announcement has just gone out and you may well have read it but I wanted to take the time to go into a little more detail here and clarify some points.
Firstly, all these activities are “pre-qualifiers”; they only qualify you for the UK live event and not directly to Barcelona. Also, these are the EASPORTS pre-qualifiers as I am still waiting for the details of what the team over at PlayStation are planning but will update everyone with those when I have them.
In total 28 players will qualify from the EASPORTS and PlayStation pre-qualifiers for the UK live event as 1 player will be joining them from a “feeder country”, likely to be Belgium.
The UK pre-qualifiers have been split into live and online activities with two football-stadium events, six retail locations and five online tournaments.
The Football-Stadium Events
- 28 Nov @ Loftus Road (QPR)
Before the QPR vs. Coventry game. Tournament is likely to start about 1pm on a first-come-first-served basis. One player from this event will qualify for the UK final.
- 29 Nov @ Emirates (Arsenal)
Before the Arsenal vs. Chelsea game. Tournament is likely to start about 2pm on a first-come-first-served basis. One player from this event will qualify for the UK final.
The Retail Tour
The retail tour will be starting soon at six shopping centres across the country and will be operating practice tournaments on the weekends leading up to the qualifying tournaments on 19 December. Each shopping centre will be hosting one qualifying tournament and finding one player for the UK final.
19th December - 10am - 7pm
Meadowhall (Sheffield), Arndale (Manchester), Whitgift (Croydon), Westfield (Derby), Bullring (Birmingham) and Bridges Shopping Centre (Sunderland).
- Each weekend before the 19th December will have practice competitions running for you to prepare at each of the shopping centres.
- One player from each shopping centre will qualify for the UK final (six total)
Online Pre-Qualifiers
Things are a little different for the online side of the pre-qualifiers. We will be using a new platform that is currently in BETA testing and is called MATES Leagues. The basic principle of this web-based platform is to enable all of you to create your own leagues and cups for your mates, uni or college buddies, work colleagues or anyone you choose. We will be creating dedicated FIWC events on here to act as the online pre-qualifiers so look out for the FIWC branding.
The current dates for all these online pre-qualifiers are below and two players from each pre-qualifier will book themselves a spot at the UK final. Please note this is not connected to the global online qualification seasons.
- 1 Dec - 14 Dec: FIWC Online Pre-qualifier 1
- 21 Dec - 4 Jan 2010: FIWC Online Pre-qualifier 2
- 11 Jan - 25 Jan 2010: FIWC Online Pre-qualifier 3
- 8 Feb - 22 Feb 2010: FIWC Online Pre-qualifier 4
- 1 Mar - 15 Mar 2010: FIWC Online Pre-qualifier 5
- 8 Mar - 15 Mar 2010: FIWC Online Pre-qualifier 6
*Please note the dates for the online pre-qualifiers are subject to change
Full rules for the online stuff will be available on the MATES Leagues platform, along with registration closer to the time and I will aim to release full details soon about how all this will work.
I will be in attendance at the Emirates event on 29 November and I believe some of the Football World guys will also be there. Chances are I will also be at the Meadowhall retail event in Sheffield on 19 December as well, so feel free to come and say hi.
For now, though, I think this is enough to get you started and I will work to keep you all updated as other bits and pieces happen or are confirmed, such as the PlayStation activities that will themselves find eight players for the UK live event.
Good luck to everyone that takes part and perhaps see some of you at the Emirates!

| How Big Can Football Get?
Monday 28.09.2009 2009 15:37 by Pudzian
Last Sunday EA SPORTS will kick-off its FIFA 10 marketing campaign with a one-off TV screening of the full two minute advert entitled ‘How Big Can Football Get’. An all-star football cast will showcase their FIFA skills during the second half-time break of the Manchester derby, live on Sky Sports 1 this Sunday.
The advert starts pre-match with Wayne Rooney, Karim Benzema, Xavi, a host of other pro football players including Theo Walcott, Tim Cahill, Bastian Schweinsteiger, FIFA gamers, and football fans preparing to kick-off in locations all over the world. The intensity of their matches grows and the pace quickens, leading ultimately to huge celebrations, huge disappointments, and all of the emotions typical of Richter Scale-sized football matches. With gamers, pros, and fans all taking part, the campaign shows how FIFA10 connects people throughout all levels of football and gaming culture.
The TV campaign from Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam asks the question ‘How Big Can Football Get?’ inspired by staggering game-play statistics which illustrate the vast number of people already participating in football through the EA SPORTS’ FIFA franchise. The campaign encourages more people to join the football movement through the invitational proposition “LET’S FIFA” that has been carried over from the successful FIFA 09 campaign.
| Ultimate Guide to FIFA - FIFA goes to Hollywood!
Tuesday 4.08.2009 2009 1:10 by Pudzian
Picture the scene… you’re playing
FIFA 09 and you’re just inside the opponent’s half with the ball at your
feet. You have a team-mate in space a few yards ahead of you, another one just
inside who’d be perfect to play a one-two with and – right across the other side
of the pitch – there’s your right-back with nothing but space surrounding him in
all directions.
Now what do you do?
If your answer is to give the ball to the first or second man, then
congratulations. You’ve chosen the best option, retained possession and
continued to build your attack which, with more sensible build-up play like
this, will most likely result in a pop at goal.
But for those of you who, like me, can’t resist a challenge and the chance to
show off ‘for the cameras’, there’s really only one option.
The Hollywood pass.
A quick change of direction and long press of the Hollywood button (which you
may find mistakenly called ‘lobbed pass’ in your manual - must be a misprint)
and off goes the ball, sailing 60-yards cross field to your team-mate. Cue that
smug glance at your opponent who silently nods back to confirm that, yes, you
are in fact a football genius.
It’s at this point that I’d like to see the on-screen player turn up his
collar, put his hands on his hips, stand back and admire his work. Maybe that
could be included for FIFA 11?
Unfortunately, the lobbed pass in FIFA 09 is more ‘straight to DVD’ than
Hollywood, in that it’s a bit of a last resort. Something to try when there’s
nothing else on or if you’re feeling lucky.
There are two mains reasons for this. The first is that the ball takes too
long to make its journey across the pitch in 09, which gives your opponent the
chance to work out what you’re doing, select his nearest player and move him
toward your target while the ball is still in the air.
Secondly, the player you’re passing to rushes toward the ball and gets caught
right underneath it, which means he needs to take more touches than he should to
get it under control. This eats up valuable seconds and makes it even more
likely that the guy you’re playing against will be all over you like a cheap
suit, if they aren’t already.
For starters, the ball moves twice as quickly across the pitch in 10 as it
does in 09, so it takes half the time to shift it from touchline to touchline.
It feels much more driven than lofted which, if you think about how someone like
Steven Gerrard would play a long pass in a game, is far more realistic. So that
takes care of the first problem.
Next up, there’s the Improved Trapping Intelligence. Instead of rushing
toward the ball, players now make the kind of decisions you’d expect to see in a
live game; judging the flight and speed of the pass, then getting into the best
position so they may control it in as few touches as possible. This saves you
valuable seconds which, when you combine that with the ball now covering the
distance in half the time, means you can switch the play and have the ball under
control before you can turn up that collar on your shirt.
The passing itself is better, too. More Accurate Passing means your players
now figure out the best spot to aim for, so that the player receiving the ball
doesn’t have to work as hard to get in under control.
There are tons of improvements in
FIFA 10, which we’ll cover in much more detail over the coming weeks, but
the enhancements to trapping and passing in particular will change the way you
put together attacks, because ultimately they give you more options; the most
exciting of which – for me – is the ability to play the Hollywood pass.
As flash as I might have made it sound here, being able to quickly switch the
play isn’t just about showing off - there are genuine advantages for the
attacking team. It allows you to shift the focus of your attack to an area where
you have more space, buying you time on the ball. It gives you the ability to
quickly play the ball to a part of the pitch where you can outnumber and
overload the other team, and it gives you an out ball when you’re being heavily
pressed in possession.
So the next time you play
FIFA 09, keep an eye on that radar at the bottom of the screen and look out
for players in acres of space. It’ll be good practise for when you get 10 and
start hammering that Hollywood button.
| FIFA 10 Gameplay Producer Blog – Responding to Community Feedback
Tuesday 4.08.2009 2009 1:06 by Pudzian
Santiago Jaramillo, Gameplay Producer on FIFA10, writes about the
importance of community feedback.
Before becoming part of the FIFA Development team, I was a FIFA fan for as
long as I can remember. Growing up in Bogota, Colombia, I bought a copy of FIFA
96 when I was about 13 years old, and have played every subsequent title since.
Back then I played countless hours of FIFA on the only desktop computer we had
at the house. Unfortunately, it was in my sister’s room…I don’t think she likes
FIFA very much.
Each FIFA title has given me innumerable moments of joy and football glory,
accompanied by numerous pet peeves that frustrated my gaming experience – I mean,
why does my defender stop on through balls? And why does the CPU always score
the same goal? And why is it so easy for me to score the same goal over and over
again?
When
I joined the FIFA team as a Gameplay Producer for Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2007, I
was glad to find out that part of my job consisted of visiting the forums and
other online sites in order to find out what was frustrating FIFA gamers around
the world. For
FIFA 10, making sure we responded to fan feedback was paramount. From fixing
bugs and exploits to refining and innovating in response to requests from fans,
we have involved the community in our attempt to make the best football game
ever.
The Value of Feedback
The forums are full of really good ideas and suggestions. The true value of
feedback, however, lies not in these original ideas, but rather in helping us
realize what the most important things for the community are. In other words, I
think we are very good at knowing what is wrong with the game and what we need
to do to improve it. Unfortunately, we cannot fix everything in one (or several!)
production cycles. Knowing what the most pressing and important issues are for
our fans helps us prioritize the countless things we want to fix.
For example, we’ve always known that the Goalkeeper could not get sent off in
FIFA 09. Ever since I joined the team, we’ve wanted to fix this. However,
technical difficulties made fixing this trivial problem anything but simple. We
knew the problem was there, we wanted to fix it, but we never thought it was
important enough to merit the several days of production time it required. Then,
a few months following the release of
FIFA 09, I kept running into more and more people upset about the Goalkeeper
being impervious to cards. They argued, quite rightly, that it was unrealistic
and it rendered the backup Goalkeepers useless. Late in the production cycle, I
decided to investigate what it would take to fix it. I got the different game
areas together – one of the challenges for this feature is that it requires
rendering, front end, audio, and gameplay support – and set out a plan to
implement it. A couple of weeks later, I was happy to go on the forums and let
everyone know that in
FIFA 10, the Goalkeeper will be able to get red carded. Had it not been for
the community feedback, it is unlikely this feature would have made it into
FIFA 10. Now everyone will have to think twice before leaving the keeper out
of the lineup!
It’s not just about the forums
We take a proactive approach when it comes to getting feedback on our game. The
forums are extremely important, but the feedback we find there is limited to the
title we already released. Just as critical is getting fans to play the most
up-to-date version of FIFA. To do this, we find several people from around the
world who love football video games to come to our studio in Vancouver, BC and
play the latest version of the game – the one with the latest code, features,
game modes, etc. We do this several times during the production cycle, and not
just in Vancouver but also in EA offices overseas. As a Gameplay Producer, I
play FIFA every day to make sure we deliver against the vision set out for the
game. However, when you play the game every day it is easy to lose perspective
on how it is changing – how different it is from the previous iteration and
whether we are on the right track. These ‘playtests’ give us a valuable
opportunity not just to ask specific questions and get feedback on new features,
but also to make sure our fans are excited about the direction we are taking
FIFA in year after year.
So what can you expect in FIFA 10?
Along with innovating and refining our game, responding to feedback from the
community was one of the paramount goals for
FIFA 10. We will never be able to address all of the issues in any given
year, but I think we took great strides in getting rid of some of the
frustrations expressed by the community.
One such frustration that I wanted to make sure we addressed this year is how
easy it is in FIFA 09 to play through balls for your fast striker to run onto
and get a one-one-one with the goalkeeper. Lots of people on the forums were
complaining that there was no need for midfield build-up play and that teams
with strong and fast strikers had too big of an advantage – a problem that made
online games very one-dimensional, as there seem to be no way of defending
against the through balls. I am South American, so I’m all about midfield
build-up! Remember Carlos Valderrama? Oh, how I miss him…
For
FIFA 10, we have spent a significant amount of time addressing issues like
this one in order to ship a game as balanced as possible. For this particular
case, some of the improvements we made to fix the problem included: tuning our
covering and positioning logic so that defenders can be in a better position to
cope with ground and lofted through balls; we slowed down the dribblers’ speed a
bit more when they touch the ball while dribbling so fast defenders will be able
to catch up to dribblers more often (it makes sense, since you cannot sprint as
fast off the ball as you would if you have to be taking consecutive dribble
touches!); and we improved the Goalkeepers’ positioning and behavior during
breakaways so they narrow down the angle better during one-on-ones.
There are many more examples like this one that illustrate how important it
has been for us this year to use the feedback from the community in our
development of
FIFA 10. As I mentioned earlier, it is not just about fixing bugs and
exploits. It is also about responding to requests. We have gone through
countless forum threads, and many of the requests we have found there will be
addressed in
FIFA 10. Perhaps one of the best examples is that we will include a Practice
Mode this year. Using the Back/Select button from the 1 on 1 arena, you’ll be
able to bring up a menu allowing you to choose to play a practice match or set
pieces, as well as the number of players you want on the field. You asked for
it, you got it!
I should wrap this up now, but I will leave you with a taste of some of the
other Gameplay features that will be in
FIFA 10 as a result of feedback from the community.
Ability to change kick taker on set pieces
Ability to move the wall
Preventing goals being scored from kick-off
Making offsides less frequent and improving our advantage logic
Quick Free Kicks
Fewer ‘cut scenes’ replaced by on-the-field player reactions
‘Super Long Throws’ – Players like Rory Delap will be able to throw
the ball into the heart of the box from afar
New ‘Ball Avoidance’ logic so teammates and the referee will get out
of the way of passes and shots
And many more!
I
hope you enjoy playing
FIFA 10 as much as I did making it. Looking forward to visiting the forums
and getting your feedback – keep it coming!

| FIFA 10 Sponsors Swindon Town
Tuesday 4.08.2009 2009 0:57 by Pudzian
EA SPORTS has teamed up with FourFourTwo magazine to co-sponsor Coca-Cola League 1 side Swindon Town. The FIFA 10 logo will stand proud on the front of the team’s away kit for the 09/10 season, and on the back of the shirt at home games.
Says EA’s PR supremo in the UK, Shawn White: “EA SPORTS is excited to be working in partnership with FourFourTwo to co-sponsor Swindon Town Football Club. We both recognise the importance of engaging with clubs from all divisions and we look forward to developing a close relationship with the club, supporters and local community.”
Frankly, we here at Off The Bench are just chuffed to know FIFA 10’s logo will spend a whole season bouncing around on football pitches, right where it belongs. And we’ll be doing our very best to get down to Swindon at every available opportunity to get to know the lads (and hand them their derrières at FIFA 10) and bring you updates during the course of the year.
Swindon Town and FIFA 10For those readers outside the UK who may not get much of an opportunity to see below the Premiership, you’ll be able to discover all the League 1 teams properly in FIFA 10. It’s no slouch as a league, featuring the likes of Leeds United, Charlton Athletic and Southampton, all of whom have featured in the Premiership in recent years.
Southampton, in fact, is the beloved team of fellow Off The Bench blogger and FIFA podcast co-host Stevie Morgan. Which should be fun, for me at least - the team is starting the season docked 10 points after financial mismanagement last year. And I myself can look to fellow League 1 competitors Yeovil Town for a connection - it’s my home town.
So to say we’re looking forward to getting involved via our new mates at Swindon would be something of an understatement. Keep it on Off The Bench for updates on all that in due course…

That sunday was not anything special for causal people but it was for us, for "cyber sport" fans. What happened?? It is all because of Polish Fifa 2008 National Team. Few guys who love football became European Champions. I do not have to remind you that this second time in a row because last year Wojtas' and Kartek's team managed to win as well. In the big final they played versus Portugal and very calmly won 14:6. They proved their good form and we can look forward for the European Nations Cup which is more important and every national team will do their best to qualify to LAN finals in Germany. As we remember, last year our team was beaten after relegation with Ukraine and did not have to book flights to Leipzig.
As we look on the lineup we can majority of 2 teams: PGS and Wilda D-Link. It is a pitty that very soon those organisations will connect in one because in National Team there can be only 3 players in the lineup. Can we look for bright future for polish players?? We will see soon. At the moment we thank for the Championship as Poland defended the tittle.

Our patchmaker PlockiWislak has made great chants for polish teams. One of these is for Wisla Krakow, one of the famous polish teams. Another one is created for Polonia Warszawa; a few years ago they won Polish Championship. Both of chants are in very high quality. I hope you’ll satisfy. Link is below.
